About Inphovid

The Story Behind Our Vision

The Beginning of Inphovid

My passion for visual storytelling began long before the digital era. I fell in love with photography at a time when we used film rolls — when every shot was taken with intention, and the results were revealed only days later, like opening a window into a moment frozen in time.

As cinema and television shaped the world around me, my curiosity naturally shifted toward videotape. The ability to capture motion, emotion, and sound in a sequence was mesmerizing. Then came the evolution of computers — and with it, the rise of digital photography and video.

This seamless blending of images, photos, and videos has always fascinated me. And after years of learning, experimenting, and evolving with the tools of the trade, I decided to channel this lifelong passion into something tangible: the creation of dedicated applications for image and video enhancement.

With dedication, precision, and care, Inphovid was born — a brand that reflects my deep connection to the visual world and my desire to help others elevate the way they see, edit, and share their visual stories.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Foton-HDR?

Foton-HDR is an image editing tool designed specifically for HDR photography, allowing you to enhance and adjust your images with easy-to-use controls. Whether you're a professional photographer, an amateur, a photography enthusiast, or simply someone who wants to improve the look of your photos or images, Foton-HDR makes advanced HDR editing accessible. With intuitive controls and intelligent adjustments, it transforms standard SDR images into vibrant, high-dynamic-range visuals—ideal for personal projects, social media content, or professional portfolios.

Instead of using gain maps, Foton-HDR applies advanced tone mapping techniques to globally enhance brightness, contrast, and color depth through Core Image processing. The result is a static HDR image encoded with the PQ transfer function and Rec. 2020 color space—fully optimized for modern HDR displays. This approach delivers the visual impact of HDR while maintaining speed, simplicity, and broad compatibility.

How do I edit an image?

Simply drag and drop an image into the application or use the import button in the toolbar. Once loaded, you can adjust various parameters like exposure, contrast, saturation, temperature, gamma, shadows, highlights, and sharpness intensity.

Why does the image quality appear reduced in the editor?

FOTON-HDR uses an intelligent optimization system to ensure smooth editing, especially with high-resolution images:

These buttons allow you to quickly resize the window to fill the screen vertically or horizontally. You can also double-click on the title bar (where 'FOTON-HDR' appears) or anywhere along the title bar to toggle vertical expansion. Similarly, double-clicking on the status bar (excluding the filename area) will toggle horizontal expansion.

How does the 'Show Original/Show Edited' button work?

This button provides a Before/After comparison feature. When you click 'Show Original', it temporarily displays your unedited image so you can compare it with your current edits. Click 'Show Edited' to return to viewing your edited version. For quick comparisons, you can also press and hold the spacebar to temporarily view the original image - release it to return to the edited version. This is particularly useful for evaluating the impact of your adjustments and ensuring you're achieving the desired look.

What is 'Save Adjustments' and how does it work?

The 'Save Adjustments' feature allows you to save your current editing settings as a preset that can be applied to other images. When you click the save icon (square with arrow down), you can name your adjustment preset. Once saved, you can apply these same settings to different images using the 'Apply Saved Adjustments' button (square with arrow up). This is perfect for maintaining consistency across multiple photos or quickly applying your favorite editing style.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Gain Map HDR?

Gain Map HDR is a specialized image conversion tool that transforms standard SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) images into HDR (High Dynamic Range) images using advanced gain map technology. Unlike traditional tone mapping approaches, our software generates a grayscale gain map that provides precise luminance control, creating authentic HDR images with expanded dynamic range that are optimized for modern HDR-capable displays.

What file formats are supported?

Gain Map HDR supports 20+ professional image formats for input including JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, HEIF, TIFF, TIF, BMP, GIF, and professional RAW formats from major camera manufacturers: such as DNG, CRW, CR2, CR3, ERF, RAF, DCR, RAW, NEF, NRW, ORF, RW2, PEF, SRW, SR2 and ARW. The output is always saved as HEIC format with embedded gain map data, which is the standard format for HDR images on Apple devices and many modern platforms.

How does gain map technology work?

Gain map technology works by creating a grayscale map that stores luminance multiplier information for each pixel. This map is combined with the base image to reconstruct the full HDR information. The gain map acts as a guide that instructs the display how much to brighten or darken each pixel, allowing for a much wider range of brightness levels than traditional SDR images. This results in more realistic lighting, better shadow detail, and enhanced highlight information.

How do I convert images to HDR?

Simply drag and drop your images into the application or click the '+' button to select files. Choose your destination folder, optionally select HDR or HDR+ mode for different enhancement intensities, enable 4:5 cropping or watermark features using the toolbar buttons, then click 'Choose Destination & Convert'. You can toggle between HDR (normal) and HDR+ (enhanced) modes using the HDR/HDR+ button in the toolbar (⌘⇧H) to control the intensity of the conversion. The app will process your images and save them as HEIC files with embedded gain maps, making them compatible with HDR displays.

What is the difference between HDR and HDR+ modes?

Gain Map HDR offers two conversion modes that differ in highlight intensity:

HDR (Normal Mode): Applies a balanced luminance enhancement suitable for most images. It preserves the natural appearance of the photo while expanding dynamic range in a subtle, controlled way.

HDR+ (Enhanced Highlights Mode): Applies approximately 43% more luminance in the brightest areas of the image compared to normal HDR. The rest of the image — suchando as midtones and shadows — remains virtually unchanged. This subtle boost makes highlights (like reflections, lights, or skies) appear slightly more vivid, while maintaining overall realism.

Think of it like increasing the brightness of a ceiling lamp in a room: in HDR, the lamp glows like a 60-watt bulb; in HDR+, it glows more like an 86-watt bulb — but the furniture, walls, and floor remain just as they were.

HDR+ is ideal when you want a little more visual 'pop' in bright spots without altering the rest of the image. You can toggle between HDR and HDR+ using the HDR/HDR+ button in the toolbar (⌘⇧H) before conversion. Both modes generate true HDR images with embedded gain maps.

What does the 4:5 crop option do?

The 4:5 crop option automatically crops your images to a 4:5 aspect ratio, where the height is 1.25 times the width. This aspect ratio is ideal for social media platforms like Instagram. The actual pixel dimensions depend on the resolution of the original image. This feature is particularly useful when preparing HDR content for social sharing, as it ensures your images display properly on mobile devices while maintaining the HDR enhancement.

How does the watermark feature work?

The watermark feature allows you to add your logo or brand mark to the converted HDR images. When enabled using the 'Logo' button in the toolbar, the watermark will be applied to all processed images during conversion. This is ideal for photographers and content creators who want to brand their HDR work — or for those who wish to indicate that the image was enhanced using the Gain Map HDR app.

Do I need an HDR display to see the results?

An HDR-capable display is recommended to fully experience the benefits of Gain Map HDR — including deeper blacks, brighter highlights, expanded brightness range, and enhanced color depth. However, the converted images will still appear visually improved on standard SDR screens, thanks to the optimized tone balance and contrast applied during conversion. Most modern Apple devices (iPhones, iPads, recent iMacs and MacBooks) support HDR viewing to varying degrees. For Mac mini users, the experience depends on the capabilities of the connected external monitor, which must support HDR to display the full effect.

Where are the converted images saved?

The app intelligently manages the destination folder while respecting Apple's privacy standards. When you first add images, the app suggests using the same folder as your source images as the destination. However, you can change this to any location using the 'Change' button in the destination path area. Once you select a destination folder, the app remembers it for future conversions using secure bookmarks. Converted images are saved in HEIC format with sequential numbering (1, 2, 3…), followed by the original filename and the suffix '_GainMapHDR' or '_GainMapHDR+' depending on the conversion mode used. If a file with the same name already exists, the app automatically adds a number in parentheses to avoid overwriting your existing files.

How can I get help with the application?

For assistance, please contact our support team via email at inphovid@gmail.com. When contacting support, please include a description of your issue, steps to reproduce any problems, your macOS version, and any specific images or settings you were using when the issue occurred.

HDR Comparison Gallery

Note: To properly view the difference between SDR and HDR images, your device (smartphone, tablet, or Mac/PC) must support HDR display. For the best experience, use Google Chrome, as other browsers may not render HDR content correctly. Without HDR support, the images will look identical.
